About this game

Card Game

Play cards, win tricks, and battle for control of a shared 3×3 grid.

Rules Overview

Trick-Tac-Foe is a 2- or 4-player trick-taking game played on a shared 3×3 grid. Players compete in head-to-head Tricks. The winning card determines which grid space the winner may control, while 10s act as Wild cards. Score points by controlling three spaces in a row, column, or diagonal.

Components

  • 1 standard 52-card deck
  • 9 two-sided Red/Black tokens
  • 1 3×3 grid

Remove all Jacks, Queens, and Kings. You will use the 40 cards from Ace through 10.

Setup

Two Players

  • Sit opposite each other.
  • Choose Red or Black.
  • Shuffle the 40-card deck and deal 20 cards face down to each player. These are your personal decks.
  • Each player draws 4 cards from their personal deck to form their hand.
  • Place the 9 tokens beside the empty grid.

Four Players

Play in two teams:

  • Team Red sits North and East.
  • Team Black sits South and West.

North always plays against South. East always plays against West. Shuffle the 40-card deck and deal 10 cards face down to each player as personal decks. Each player draws 4 cards to form their hand.

The player who most recently ate a Tic Tac is the starting player. If nobody qualifies or remembers, choose randomly.

Objective

Score points by controlling three spaces in a row, column, or diagonal. When you score:

  • Gain 1 point .
  • Clear all tokens from the grid.
  • Continue playing with your current hand and personal deck.

The player or team with the most points after the final round wins.

Core Concepts and Terms

Reading the Grid

Every player reads the grid from their own seated perspective:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

The grid itself is not permanently numbered. Your top-left space is always 1, and your bottom-right space is always 9. This means players sitting on different sides may use different card values to target the same physical space. The center is always 5 for everyone.

Card Ranks

Cards rank from highest to lowest: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, Ace . Ace counts as 1.

If both cards have the same rank, use suit to break the tie: Spades > Hearts > Diamonds > Clubs . Suits have no other effect.

The 10: Wild

A 10 is both the highest-ranked card and a Wild. If you win a Trick with a 10, you may choose any space on the grid instead of using a numbered space.

Trick Structure

Two-Player Trick

Both players:

  • Choose 1 card from their hand and place it face down.
  • Reveal simultaneously.
  • Compare the cards. Higher rank wins. If ranks tie, higher suit wins.
  • The winner takes the board action for their winning card.
  • Check for scoring.
  • Discard both played cards to a central discard pile.
  • Each player draws back up to 4 cards from their personal deck, if able.

Continue until both players have played all 20 cards.

Four-Player Trick Set

Each Trick Set contains two Tricks.

  • All four players choose 1 card and place it face down.
  • The opposing pair containing the starting player reveals simultaneously.
  • Resolve their Trick and take the winning board action.
  • Check for scoring.
  • The other opposing pair reveals simultaneously.
  • Resolve their Trick and take the winning board action.
  • Check for scoring.
  • Discard all four played cards.
  • All four players draw back up to 4 cards from their personal decks, if able.
  • Starting position passes clockwise.

The two fixed opposing pairs are always:

  • North vs South
  • East vs West

All four cards must be chosen before either pair reveals. A committed card cannot be changed after seeing the result of the first Trick. A 4-player round contains 10 Trick Sets.

Actions

Ace Through 9

If you win with Ace through 9, locate the matching space from your perspective. Then:

  • Empty: Place a token with your color face up.
  • Opponent's color: Flip the token to your color.
  • Your color: No effect.

Winning a Trick does not guarantee that the board changes. Managing when to play cards that target spaces you already control is part of play.

Wild 10

When you win with a 10, choose any space on the grid and resolve it normally:

  • Empty: Place your color.
  • Opponent controlled: Flip it to your color.
  • Your color: No effect.

Scoring

After every board action, check for three tokens of the acting player's color in a:

  • row,
  • column, or
  • diagonal.

If there is a line, score 1 point and immediately clear the entire grid. A single board action scores a maximum of 1 point, even if it creates more than one line.

After clearing, continue with the next scheduled Trick. Do not reset hands, personal decks, discard piles, or the 4-player starting position.

End of Round, End of Game, and Ties

End of a Round

A round ends when every player has played all cards in their personal deck and hand.

  • 2 Players: Each player plays 20 cards, for 20 Tricks.
  • 4 Players: Each player plays 10 cards, for 10 Trick Sets and 20 resolved Tricks.

Any tokens remaining on the grid at the end of a round do not score. Clear the grid, shuffle all 40 cards, and redeal for the next round.

Standard Game

  • 2 Players: Play 2 rounds.
  • 4 Players: Play 3 rounds.

Add together all points scored across every round. The player or team with the most points wins. If tied, the game ends in a draw.

One-Shot Game

For a faster game, play 1 round. The player or team with the most points wins.

Examples

Numbered Card

You win with a 3♥. From your perspective, space 3 is the upper-right space. If it is empty, place a token showing your color. If it shows your opponent's color, flip it to your color. If it already shows your color, nothing happens.

Wild

You win with the 10♣. Instead of targeting a fixed space, choose any of the 9 spaces and place or flip a token normally.

Perspective

North controls a physical space using a 1. A player seated on another side of the grid sees that physical space as a different number. Players always resolve cards according to their own perspective, not the perspective of the player who previously controlled the space.

Four-Player Score

All four players have committed their cards. North and South resolve first. North wins, takes control of a space, and completes three Red tokens in a row. Team Red scores 1 point and the entire grid is cleared. East and West then reveal their already-committed cards and resolve their Trick on the newly cleared grid.
